What is Carnaval?

Goa Carnaval, also called Carnaval, is a lively festival held every year in Goa, India. It's one of India's most famous cultural events, drawing people from all over the world.

Goa's history with Portugal influenced its culture significantly. The festival, originally called "Entrudo," began in the mid-18th century, featuring street parties and colorful festivities.

After India gained independence, Goa remained under Portuguese rule until 1961. Modern Goa Carnaval took shape inspired by Brazil's Rio Carnaval, as a celebration of Goan culture and a protest against the Portuguese regime.

 



Who is King Momo?

King Momo is a central figure in Goa Carnaval, symbolizing joy and excess. He leads the parade, portrayed as a jolly, larger-than-life character embodying the festival's spirit. King Momo's decree permits merry-making during Carnaval.

 

Dates and Location:

Carnaval happens annually in February or March, lasting four days. In 2023, it falls on February 18th-21st. Panaji hosts the main festivities, with other towns and cities like Margao, Vasco da Gama, and Mapusa also celebrating.
